downtohuck asked: in regards to the dreamcatcher tattoo... what if you try to abide by the meaning behind the tattoo in your life? on another blog I saw someone ask whether her ahisma tattoo (which she got before she knew about cultural appropriation) was disrespectful, even though she believes in what it represents and lives her life following that meaning, is still disrespectful. the owner of the blog said it wasn't, so long as she lives by it. this seemed to make sense to me. [cont’d] It made me think of a friend who practices Shintoism, though she was not raised Shinto nor have any heritage related to Shintoism. If she were to get a Shinto symbol tattooed to herself, wouldn’t it just be an expression of her religion? Thoughts?

the biggest question here is that no one has found a justifiable reason for racist tattoos besides “well, this one person means well so it’s not racist.” can she honestly be a good judge of what is racist and not racist if she’s the one doing it?

does shintoism even allow tattoos?
