Where are the hipsters getting all these war bonnets/headdresses?

No, really. My second graders want to know and I don’t have an answer for them. 

The idea of stereotypes came up today in a way that needed some correcting and eye-opening. I talked to my students about sterotypes of natives. How some people dress up like American Indians for Halloween. Some people think wearing a war bonnet or face paint means they are “dressing like an Indian like you”.

1. Their minds were blown.

2. They don’t know where the non-natives are getting all the traditional stuff.  

Tumblr, the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine second graders on Fort Belknap would like you to know…

“We LOVE basketball.”

“We don’t live in teepees.”

“Some of us are cowboys and cowgirls.”

“Some of us dance at powwows.”

“We dress like…kids.”

And would like to ask…

“Have you ever met an Indian?”

“Where did you get those war bonnets?”

OKAY ALL OF THIS!

Also, can you just imagine all these adorable little muffins asking the hipsters, “Why are you racist like that? How can you say you’re dressed up like me when there are zero cartoon characters on your t-shirt?”
