Anonymous asked: otherkin is ridiculous to me, but cultural appropriation is definitely a real thing

weetz:

ayiman:

Shit did just get real.

citizenwasp:

Well, it is certainly more real than otherkin! I’m not saying there aren’t actual issues at the heart of it. Most definitely, it is offensive to do blackface or dress as a “sexy squaw” for Halloween, and just makes the wearer look ignorant.

Bullshit.  You posted a picture of this very thing, and when the offense was pointed out, you responded with flippancy.  You also, for some reason, felt the need to underline just how much you cared.  I have no choice but to conclude that you’re completely full of it, and definitely a racist asshole.

What bothers me are the folk on Tumblr who take issue with every little thing. A white person with dreads? Cultural appropriation.

Yup.  Here’s a fun post on why.  Nice to know that you think of this stuff as “little things” though.  I can assure you that plenty of other (non-white) people feel differently.

A white girl wearing mocassins? Cultural appropriation.

What do you know about moccasins?  Do you understand the concept of commodification?  The phrase “eating the other?”

Cultural expressions of marginalized people are sold to the dominant culture, devoid of their meaning, so that people like you can own a ‘piece of the primitive’, and assign your own meanings. Meanings which suit you and exclude others.

So, I ask again: What the fuck do you know about moccasins?

Joking use of the term “spirit animal” (as in, “lando calrissian is my spirit animal”)? Cultural appropriation.

How about instead of heaping disrespect on the spiritual practices of others, you just refrain from clumsily grasping at some tenuous conception of wit and shut the fuck about spirit animals and everything else forever?  Some of us had our reverence for the spirit world beaten out of us, and you treat it like a joke?

I mean, I guess I understand that being a part of an essentially empty cultural paradigm based almost entirely on consumer transaction begets a profound crisis of identity, so this kind of smugly irreverent bullshit is to be expected.

Using chopsticks? Doing yoga? Henna tattoos? Someone call the waaaahmbulance!

In between the false-equivalencies (chopsticks), resorting to tired internet cliches (waaahmbulance? are you fucking 13?) and your complete ignorance (yoga and henna are probably not what you seem to think they are), you demonstrate quite clearly that you are indeed carrying some internalized bullshit.

And the angry telling off and creative curses the professionally offended come up with, like “douchewaffle.” I just want to shake these folks.

This is coming from someone who just told people that they should call the waaahmbulance.

In the words of Coketalk, get a real cause, because this shit does not rise to the level of controversy.

And here’s where your racism becomes plain for everyone to see.

You don’t think the protection of our cultures from commercial exploitation (commodification!) by outsiders for the benefit of outsiders is a ‘real cause.’

You don’t think that fighting against the perpetuation of a stereotypes that distills a race of culturally diverse people into a few appropriated symbols is a ‘real cause.’

You reserve the right to define a real cause despite having no cultural or racial connection whatsoever, nor any real understanding of the issue at hand.  See, you have the privilege of disregarding this controversy because it really doesn’t affect you in any way.  You don’t stand to lose a fucking thing, so of course you don’t give a shit.

What I personally don’t get is why you think you can tell me why I shouldn’t care, when I have every reason to care.

It strikes me, that to make such a big deal of such nonsense, the professionally offended tumblr police do not know much about real suffering.

It strikes me as patently ridiculous that you can make arbitrary statements about the level and scale of someone else’s suffering when you really have no basis for comparison.  Like, at all.

What do you know about:

Forced relocation.  Land theft.  Resource exploitation.  Environmental devastation.  Residential schools.  Eugenics.  Medical experimentation without consent.  Failures in the delivery of education, health care, housing, jobs and basic services.  Poverty.  Racism, both personally mediated and institutional.  Addiction.  Abuse.  Generational trauma.  Police brutality.

?

And you presume to lecture POCs about suffering?

What the fuck you do you know?

Which there is a lot of. Understatement of the year, I know.

You really have no idea, but your stab at magnanimity is noted.

And there is also a lot of racism still, real racism, insidious racism. My wearing dreamcatcher earrings does not rise to that level.

There sure is. Would you like a good example of insidious racism?

When a presumably progressive, forward-thinking white person behaves in a racist manner, then denies their racist behaviour while delivering homilies about the presence of racism.

Pretty fucking insidious isn’t it?  Your mis-use of an appropriated symbol of an oppressed culture is complicity.  The fact that you recognize that you’re doing it while openly rubbing our noses in it is more “naked, right out in the open” racism than insidious racism, though.

But to the social justice community it is on the same level as Jim Crow

Straw man.  Besides, I’m not making the comparison.  I’m just freely declaring that you’re an oppressive, racist asshole and your whitesplaining isn’t doing you any favours.

and posts about such things are prefaced with the same trigger warnings!

Trigger warning for whitesplaining

I am not ignorant.

pfffffffffffff, I think we can safely put the lie to that bit of bullshit.

I am well read and bright,

Have a cookie.  My favourite books have spaceships on the cover.

and would hate to do anything racist, BECAUSE I AM NOT A RACIST, but I keep being called this by the social justice community.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s a fucking duck.

and by “duck,” I mean “racist asshole.”

It doesn’t matter how many times you say you aren’t.  You fucking are.  You don’t think protecting our culture constitutes a real cause. This is probably because you maintain the belief that all cultures are yours to exploit, use and appropriate as you see fit.

This is white supremacist and racist.

I also find it nearly offensive that this community calls itself Social Justice. I don’t see any justice. Justice is a powerful word indeed.

I think it’s obvious that you don’t know the first fucking thing about justice.

What I see is a lot of whining, and a lot of stunting and acting superior to nearly everyone.

Funny, so do I.  All I see in this post is whining, and self-superiority.  Posting it was a stunt.

These so-called tolerant folks.

Tolerance is a construct of white supremacy.  Tolerance says I am able to recognize difference and I can authorize it.  By tolerating someone, you are, in effect, suffering them to exist in subordination to you and your existence.  Tolerance is a run-down neighbourhood where all the brown people live, while you and yours cavort in the leafy green suburbs.

It’s been said that the very far right and the very far left are actually quite similar, if politics are seen as a line around a sphere. They come quite close…think Mao Tse Tung anc Hitler. The far right has God. The extreme far left (I consider myself a moderate liberal) has the social justice community.

You certainly are a liberal.  A good little tolerant white liberal pitching a fit after being confronted with the ugly truth of your internalized racism.

You really don’t know anything about politics at all, do you?  How “Right” and “Left” is a meaningless spectrum based on nothing more than seating arrangement in the old French Estates General?  If you think I’m essentially the same as a fascist because I’ve declare your obvious disrespect and disregard for my people to be racist, then you’re really just fucking ignorant.

and this?

“The far right has God. The extreme far left has the social justice community.”

I’m not going to address it in any way.  It is perfect just the way it is.

And that’s all I have to say about that. Except that I was getting so into this response that my potholder caught on fire on the stove, and I dropped it to the ground and stamped it out with my little be-mocassined feet. Cheers. And come off anon.

And here is where the smug white liberal racist rubs our noses in the fact that she doesn’t give a shit about us, our causes or really anything that gets in the way of her ability to take, appropriate, define and consume without guilt.

Fuck you very much.

I hope you find out who the anon was.

-KNEE SLAPPING HILARITY-

oh look. another racist white person defining the goal posts of what marginalized cultures can find racist, while being a racist asshole!

basically, same shit, different day. goddamn, can one of them muster up at least one semblance of originality instead of just falling back into the same tired shit?
